Hawaii Trips and Photos
by Kathie Walling

Reports and photos of Kathie Walling's Hawaii trips between 2005 and 2009.

2009 Hawaii Trips

2009 July Oahu Trip
I planned my July 17-31, 2009 Honolulu trip around the Roy Sakuma Ukulele Festival in Kapiolani Park, the Prince Lot Hula Festival at Moanalua Gardens, the Darren Benitez and Hoku Zuttermeister concert at the Bishop Museum, and Walter Rhee's all-day Saturday Chinatown Food Tour. This turned out to be a great time to visit Honolulu because plenty of other exciting events took place during that same two week period.

2009 May Oahu Trip
My May 2009 Honolulu trip was a very special trip focused on family (more about this later).

2009 March Oahu Trip
I planned my March 2009 trip around the Hawaii Academy of Recording Arts HARA Lifetime Achievement Awards Ceremony at the Sheraton Waikiki Hotel. I also watched two parades that week: Honolulu Festival Parade and the Waikiki St. Patrick's Day Parade, both on Kalakaua Avenue in Waikiki.d

2009 January Oahu Trip
I planned this trip around the Breathe Concert at the Hawaii Theatre, the Ala Wai Challenge Canoe Races and Hawaiian Games in Ala Wai District Park, and the USS Missouri, 65th Anniversary, Might Mo Cookoff and Concert in Pearl Harbor.

2008 Hawaii Trips

2008 October Oahu Trip
Events I attended during my October 2008 Hawaii trip included the Na Hoku Hanohano Aha Mele Concert, Halloween night in Waikiki, and an all-star jazz evening at Don Ho's Island Grill, where I met Hawaii photographer Michi Moore and 101 year old ukulele player Bill Tapia for the first time.

    2008 July Oahu Trip
Events I attended during my July 2008 Hawaii trip included the Roy Sakuma Ukulele Festival in Kapiolani Park, a dinner concert at Chai's Island Bistro featuring HAPA, and music performances by Henry Kapono and Lopaka Colon at Duke's Waikiki and performances by Jerry Santos and Eddie Kamae at the Hilton Hawaiian Village Tapa Bar.

    2008 April Oahu Trip
During my April 2008 Trip I took my mother to a fancy afternoon tea at the Waioli Tea Room in the Manoa Valley. I love that place!

    2008 February Oahu Trip
I have to remind myself what I did during my February 2008 Hawaii trip.

    2008 January Oahu Trip
Activities and events I participated in during my February 2008 Hawaii trip included visiting the Aloha Stadium Swapmeet, driving across Central Oahu from Honolulu to the North Shore surfing beaches.

    2007 Hawaii Trips

    2007 December Oahu Trip
During my December Hawaii trip I saw Neal Sedaka on a live taping of the Night Time with Andy Bumatai Show, which had recently moved from the Hilton Hawaiian Village Hotel to the upstairs "Society of Seven" Showroom at the Outrigger Waikiki on the Beach Hotel.

    2007 September Oahu Trip
One of my sisters met me in Honolulu in September of 2007 and we packed plenty of activities into our week-long trip. On my own I attended the Aloha Festivals Falsetto Contest at the Sheraton Waikiki Hotel, and spent an entire day at the beautiful Abhasa Spa at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel. I also attended two tapings of the Andy Bumatai show at the Hilton Hawaiian Village Resort and took an architect's tour of downtown Honolulu. I spent a night in my sisters vacation rental in Waimanalo in East Oahu, and together we attended the Sea Life Park Luau, ate at Buzz's Steak House in Kailua, and visited the Byodo In Temple, Kailua Beach, Lanikai, Hoolamaluhia Gardens, the the Pali Lookout, and the Waimanalo Polo Fields.

(WASN'T THERE ANOTHER TRIP IN THE SUMMER OR FALL OF 2007?)

    2007 August Oahu Trip
On my August 2007 trip I took the home of the Brave Tour, and spent an entire day at the Waikiki Plantation Spa.

    2007 June Trip
I think on this trip I took my parents out for a fancy afternoon tea at the Halekulani Hotel.

    2007 February Oahu Trip
On this trip my sister and I shared an oceanfront suite at the New Otani Beach Hotel for part of our trip and we shared a room at the Ihilani Resort and Spa in West Oahu for a few days at the end of our trip. We also visited the Kualoa Ranch, the Dole Plantation, and on the Dole Plantation Day we ate lunch at the Grass Shack Grill in Haleiwa.

    2006 Hawaii Trips

    2006 October Oahu Trip
On this trip I stayed at four different hotels, the Manoa Valley Inn Bed and Breakfast, the Aqua Bamboo Hotel on Kuhio, the historic Royal Hawaiian Hotel, and the New Otani Kaimana Bech Hotel. I attended the Aloha Festivals Falsetto Contest in the Monarch Ballroom of the Royal Hawaiian Hotel, took Matthew Gray's "Hole in the Wall" food tour with my parents, and toured Doris Duke's Shangri La Mansion with my mother after we had a lovely lunch at the Honolulu Academy of Arts. I also attended the Hispanic Heritage Festival in Kapiolani Park and experienced a significant earthquake on October 15, 2006!

(TRYING TO REMEMBER DATES OF OTHER 2006 TRIPS)

    2006 January Oahu Trip
Activities included taking a circle island flight above Oahu, drove around the island, had lunch at Fumi's Kahuku Shrimp Truck, visited the north shore surfing beaches, at lunch at the Grass Skirt Grill, went sightseeing at Hanauma Bay, the Halona Blow Hole, Moanalua Bay, and the Pali Lookout. We visited the most popular Pearl Harbor attractions: the USS Arizona Memorial, the USS Bowfin Submarine, and the USS Missouri Battleship. At this time, the Pacific Aviation Museum had not yet opened on Ford Island. We at at two Italian Restaurnats, one at the Koko Marina Center in Hawaii Kai and one on the street level of the Marriott Waikiki Hotel.
