Kalaupapa Airport on Molokai (LUP)

General information and facts about the Kalaupapa airport on the island of Molokai in Hawaii.

Kalaupapa Airport is located on the island of Molokai and serves residents and visitors to the state Department of Health’s Hansen’s Disease facility. The airport is operated by the State of Hawaii, Department of Transportation, Airports division.

Kalaupapa Airport occupies 55 acres of land on the northern peninsula of Molokai, two miles north of the Kalaupapa community.

The airport serves commuter/air taxi operations and some air cargo operations.

The Kalaupapa Airport first opened in 1934. The passenger terminal and rest house were built in 1951. The runway was realigned, widened and extended in 1992. Other improvements include airfield lighting for emergency nighttime operations and a paved aircraft apron.

Permission is required from the State Department of Health to enter Kalaupapa Settlement.

Facilities at the airport include a single 2,760-foot runway, a small passenger terminal, and airport support areas. The airport does not have a control tower. To comply with the wishes of the community and to minimize disturbance to the surrounding national park, no significant improvements are currently planned.

HISTORY: The passenger terminal at Kalaupapa Airport was completed in 1951. A paved runway replaced the grass and sand runway in 1954,and a $9.2 million upgrade was completed in 1992.
