The original name of Aloha Airlines was Trans-Pacific Airways (TPA), and it was founded by Honolulu Publisher Ruddy Tongg in 1946. For many years, the nickname of TPA was "the Aloha Airlines", and in 1958 the company officially changed their name to Aloha Airlines.

In 2000 Aloha Airlines started adding transpacific flights, and the earliest of those flights connected Hawaii with Oakland and Orange County in California and Las Vegas, Nevada.

In 2001 there some preliminary plans were made for Aloha Airlines to merge with Hawaiian Airlines, but those plans fell through. Because of rising fuel costs and other expenses, Aloha airlines filed for bankruptcy protection in December of 2004. They emerged from bankruptcy reorganization in February of 2006 under the ownership of California billionaire Ron Burkle's Yucaipa Companies.
