1919 Emergency landing strip established on Molokai.
1920 Charles Fern carries the first pay passenger interisland. The tri9p is to be direct from Kapiolani Park to a polo field in Makawao, Maui. However, between Molokai and Maui, Fern’s gas gauge malfunctions, indicating an empty tank, and forces him to land in a pasture near the Cookie Ranch office on Molokai. He then refuels and goes on to Maui, but is unable to locate the polo field and lands instead in the fair grounds in Kahului.
1923 Aviator Charles Stoffer in "Charley’s Crate" delivers the Sunday morning newspaper to Molokai, then to Maui, landing at Camp One near Spreckelsville.
1927 Governor signs an executive order to set aside territorial land for an airport at Hoolehua.
1929 Commercial interisland air service is started by Inter-Island Airways (Hawaiian Airlines) with two Sikorsky Amphibians, the "Hawaii" and the "Maui". The inaugural flight is from John Rodgers Airport to Hilo, landing at Maalaea Field, Maui, en route. Scheduled operations also start to Molokai.
1935 The U.S. Army established a radio station at Molokai Airport.
1938 An extension to the runway at Molokai Airport is made after a land exchange between the territory and the Hawaiian Homes Commission.
1951 A passenger terminal/rest house is completed at Kalaupapa.
1953 Drainage ditch construction at Molokai Airport is completed on September 22. This construction was necessary as heavy rain caused mud and water to flow onto the operating area previously.
1954 A paved runway replaced the sod-on-sand runway at Kalaupapa Airport.
1957 Passenger/freight terminal at Molokai Airport was completed on June 7.
1969 Terminal expansion work begins at Molokai Airport in June and is completed in August, resulting in space for the new snack bar concession and covered loading on the terminal’s curbside.
1974 Perimeter security fencing is installed at Molokai to meet new FAA requirements.
1979 The new FAA air traffic control tower at Molokai Airport was dedicated on July 13.
1991 The fire protection system at Molokai Airport was upgraded in December.
1992 A $9.2 million project to upgrade Kalaupapa Airport was completed in September.
