Hawaii Commemorative Quarter Coin
To be released in November of 2008

Hawaii Governor Linda Lingle selected the final design for the Hawaii commemorative quarter coin on April 23, 2007. The new coin will be minted for ten weeks beginning in November of 2008. The new Hawaii quarter will look like this:

The statue of King Kamehameha I is etched onto the right side of the coin and his outstretched hand is pointing toward the eight main Hawaiian Islands, which are etched into the left side of the coin. The Hawaii state motto is etched into the lower left side of the coin: "ua mau ke ea o ka aina i ka pono" (the life of the land is perpetuated in righteousness). The word "Hawaii" and the year Hawaii was admitted to the union - 1959 - are etched into the top of the coin. The year the coin was minted - 2008 and "e pluribus unum (out of the many, one) are etched into the bottom of the coin.

Designing the New Coin
Hawaii Governor Linda Lingle established the Hawaii Commemorative Quarter Advisory Committee (HCQAC) in February of 2006. In April of that year the public was invited to submit design suggestions for the new quarter. The committee received more then 400 design ideas. Five finalists were selected and in April of 2007 the HCQAC created a poll and asked the public to vote on the five designs. More then 26,000 votes were received. The design "Hawaii: The Island State" received the most votes and on April 23, 2007 Governor Lingle announced that design would be featured on the new Hawaii quarter.
