Shoyu Chicken Recipe

This Cantonese plate lunch favorite is bone-in chicken pieces baked in a sweet sauce flavored with soy sauce, garlic, and ginger.

Ingredients for Shoyu Chicken
  • 3/4 cups soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons ginger root, chopped
  • 1-1/2 cups water
  • 5 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 seed star anise
  • 1/4 cup sliced green onions
  • 3 pounds of chicken (all thighs or mixed)
  • 2 tablespoons of cornstarch
  • 4 tablespoons of water

    Instructions for Shoyu Chicken
Bring soy sauce, honey, brown sugar, water, ginger, anise, garlic and scallion to a boil. Lower heat and let simmer for 2 minutes. Arrange chicken pieces in a single layer in a large baking dish and bake at 350 degrees for 60 minutes. Remove chicken pieces from sauce and arrange on a platter. Skim the fat off the sauce. Mix cornstarch with water and add to sauce as a thickener. When sauce has thickened, pour over chicken and serve with rice.
