Remembering Astronaut Ellison Onizuka
1946-1986

Hawaii-born NASA astronaut Ellison Shoji Onizuka died when the Space Shuttle Challenger exploded shortly after taking off from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The accident took place on January 28, 1986 at 11:40 a.m.

Ellison Onizuka's first space flight was Space Shuttle Discovery flight STS 51-C, January 24-27, 1985. On that flight he orbited the earth 48 times before landing safely in Florida.

2nd Space Flight:
Challenger Space Flight STS 51-L
Ellison Onizuka's second space flight was Space Shuttle Challenger flight STS 51-L. Onizuka and his entire crew were killed when their spacecraft exploded shortly after it was launched on January 28, 1986.
