Eddie Aikau

Eddie Aikau was born in Kahului, Maui on May 4, 1946 and he was lost at sea on March 16, 1978.

The Life of Eddie Aikau
-Born: May 4, 1946
-Died: March 17, 1978
-Full Name: Edward Ryan Makua Hanai Aikau
-Birth Place: Kahului Maui
-Father: Solomon Aikau
-Mother: Henrietta Aikau
-Learned to surf at the Kahului Harbor shorebreak
-Moved to Oahu in 1959
-Left school at age 16 to work in Dole Pineapple factory
-Became an Oahu north shore lifeguard in 1968
-Worked beaches from Sunset to Haleiwa including Waimea Bay
-Braved waves of 30 feet or more to save lives
-Named "lifeguard of the year" in 1971
-Lifeguard at Waimea Bay
-Became famous for surfing big waves
-1st at 1977 Duke Kahanamoku Invitational Surfing Championships

The Death of Eddie Aikau
- -Canoe left Hawaiian Islands on March 17, 1978.
-Developed a leak and capsized about 12 miles south of Molokai.
-Eddie paddled towardlanai on his surfboard to get help.
-He was never seen again.
-Rest of crew was rescued by U.S. Coast Guard
-His rescue attempt was large in Hawaii's history
-The last person lifeguard Eddie Aikau rescued at Waima Bay was TV producer John Orland.

    Big Wave Invitational
    Articles and information about the "Quicksilver Big Wave Invitational in Memory of Eddie Aikau". Event was created by Bruce Raymond and Bob McKnight. Eddie's borther Clyde Aikau won the first een in 1985. Only held when waves are 20 feet or higher at Waimea Bay. As of 2008 it had only been held 7 times, most recently in December of 2004. Only 24 big wave surfers are invited to attend and when the waves get big they fly in from all over the world.
