History of the Ilikai Hotel in Waikiki

Information about the history of Waikiki's Ilikai HOtel from the time it was built in the 1960's through 2009, when the Ilikai Hotel management contract was. awarded to Aqua Hotels and Resorts. See also Introduction to the Ilikai Hotel and Photos of the Ilikai Hotel

Late 1950's / Early 1960's
The Ilikai Hotel was conceived of and owned by self-made millionaire Chin Ho and it was designed by Seattle Space Needle designer John Graham, Jr. He designed the hotel with three wings radiating from a central point give the hotel its distinctive Y-shape.

During the hotel's 1961 groundbreaking ceremony, a Monkeypod tree was planted by Chinn Ho and his high school classmate Duke Kahanamoku. That tree still stands in the courtyard plaza of the hotel.

When the hotel opened on February 29, 1964 it had 1050 rooms and Hawaii's first glass elevator.

In 1974 Chin Ho sold the Ilikai Hotel to Marriott International.

In 2000 the name of the Ilikai Hotel was changed to the Renaissance Ilikai Waikiki Hotel.

In 2006, Brian Anderson's Anekona Development Group purchased hotel sections of the Ilikai, including 703 rooms, 115,000 square feet of commercial space, a 200,000 square foot parking garage, and open areas around the hotel. At the time of the purchase, they planned a $40 to $60 million renovation they were never able to do.

In 2009, when Anekona's Ilikai Hotel property was facing foreclosure, it was acquired by iStar Financial. iStar awarded the management contract for the Ilikai's 203 hotel rooms to Aqua Hotels and Resorts. At the same time, the name of the Ilikai Hotel was changed to "The Ilikai Hotel and Suites".
