History of the Coconut Plaza Hotel

Information, facts, and significant dates
in the history of the Coconut Plaza Hotel in Waikiki.
1962
The Coconut Plaza Hotel was built in 1962 by commercial and residential
real estate developer F. George Gilman. I believe at the time
he was the owner of a company called Coconut Development, Inc.
(He also built another hotel in Hawaii, the Coconut Inn on Maui).
I'm pretty sure the orignal entrance to the Coconut Plaza Hotel
faced the Ala Wai Canal and and the hotel's original entrance
was at 2177 Ala Wai Boulevard.
1979
This City and County of Honolulu Building permit
was issued on December 17, 1979 and the work was completed
September 1, 1979 at the "Waikiki Holiday Hotel" at 450 Lewers
Street.
1989
In 1989 George Gilman sold his 88 room Coconut Plaza Hotel
to Ishimura Building Company, Ltd of Osaka, Japan for
$20,000,000 USD.
1991
In 1991 the Poemonte Corporation sold the Coconut Plaza
Hotel to Hawaii Niju-Ichi Corporation, Inc. and J.C.
West, Inc. (an affiliate of C. Itoh and Company) for
$21,800,000 USD.
I have also read something about a
lawsuit related to the August 1, 1991 sale of
the Coconut Plaza Hotel by the Ishimura Building Company.
I'm not sure if the hotel was sold twice in 1991 or if
one of the parties in the aforementioned 1991 sale was actally the
Ishimura Building Company DBA a different company name.
What I was able to find out was that in May of 1991, Ishimura Building
Company contracted with a company called NTB to help them
sell the hotel. The hotel was sold and that sale closed on August 1, 1991.
1992
The Coconut Plaza was extensively renovated in 1992 and I believe this
is when the hotel's entrance was moved to Lewers Street and the hotel's
address was changed from 2177 Ala Wai Boulevard to 450 Lewers Street.
2000
In the spring of 2000, Aston Hotels and Resorts
took over management of the Coconut Plaza Hotel. The
official name of the hotel was changed to the
Aston Coconut Plaza Hotel.
2005
On August 1, 2005 Aston Hotels and Resorts officially
joined 13 other North American lodging companies to
form ResortQuest International. At that time the
official name of the Coconut Plaza was changed from
the Aston Coconut Plaza hotel to the
ResortQuest Coconut Plaza Hotel.
2006
On December 20, 2006 Aqua Hotels and Resorts took over
operating the Coconut Plaza Hotel when they were awarded
the management contract by hotel owner 3D Investments LLC of California.
The name of the hotel was changed from the ResortQuest Coconut Plaza Hotel
to the Aqua Coconut Plaza hotel, effective December 30, 2006.
Aqua Resorts Assumes Management of Coconut Plaza Hotel
2008
In 2008 the Aqua Coconut Plaza Hotel was closed
in late February for extensive renovatins.
When the hotel re-opened (sometime between June and August
of 2008) it was renamed the Aqua Coconut Waikiki Hotel.
It only had that name for a short time because shortly
after that it became the Best Western Coconut Waikiki Hotel.
I am trying to find out if Aqua is still involved in
managing the hotel because it is still listed on the
Aqua Resorts Web site as of September 2008.
