Sony Open Golf Tournament

Information and results of the Sony Open in Hawaii, a golf tournament on the PGA Tour. The event has been held at the Waialae Country Club in Honolulu, Hawaii since the very first event in 1965. The event typically takes place in January and it is the second event on the PGA Tour. Note that Sony has only committed to sponsoring the event through 2010.

The Sony Open is the first full-field event, and the second overall event on the PGA Tour. It is held every January at the Waialae Country Club, a golf club located a few miles east of Waikiki, adjacent to the Kahala Resort and Spa. The Sony Open is usually held the second week in January and more then 100 of the worlds top professional golfers participate in the week-long event. Note that Sony has only committed to sponsoring the Sony Open PGA golf tournament though 2010.

2010 Sony Open Golf Tournament
The 2010 Sony Open Golf Tournament will take place January 11-17, 2010. The total prize purse will be $5,500,000, of which $990,000 will go to the winner. SPECTATOR TICKETS: Admission to the Sony Open will be free January 11-12, 2009. Tickets for January 13-17 will cost $20 per day or $50 for a badge that will get you in all week. There will also be an "Ocean Club Sky Pass" costing $175 per day for January 14-17 that will includes admission to the event, seating on the 17th hole, and buffet food service and soft drinks in the skybox.

The 2008 Sony Open took place January 7-13, 2008. Kyung-Ju Choi (aka Choi Kyung-Ju and KJ Choi) of South Korea won the Sony Open in 2008 and he took home $954,000 in prize money.

The 2007 Sony Open Golf Tournament took place January 11-16, 2007. Paul Goydos of United States finished first in 2007 and he won $936,000 of the $5,200,000 total purse.

In 1992 the name of the event was changed again, from the "United Hawaiian Open" to the "United Airlines Hawaiian Open. The winner that year was John Cook of the United States.

1991 United Hawaiian Open Golf Tournament
United Airlines began sponsoring the Waialae PGA golf tournament in 1991 when that change became effective the name of the event was changed from the "Hawaiian Open" to the "United Hawaiian Open". The winner of the 1991 United Hawaiian Open was Lanny Wadkins of the United States who was awarded $198,000 first prize.

Has Anybody Won the Sony Open More then Once?
Nobody has won the golf tournament now known as the Sony Open three times or more, but four men finished in first place twice: Hubert Green in 1978 and 1979, Corey Pavin in 1986 and 1987, Lanny Wadkins in 1988 and 1991, and Ernie Ells in 2003 and 2004.

The Sony Open in Hawaii is one of Hawaii's largest charity events, and it might be THE largest. The Sony Open is the principal fund-raising event for the Friends of Hawaii Charities organization. That organization and it's partner, the Harry & Jeanette Weinberg Foundation, have raised more then $9,000,000 for the benefit of hundreds of Hawaii non-profit organizations.
