2009 Honolulu 9/11 Remembrance Walk
Information about the September 2009 9/11 Memorial
Walk led by Honolulu Mayor Mufi Hannemann.
Mayor Mufi Hannemann will lead the fourth annual Mayor's
Remembrance Walk on Sunday, September 6, in observance of
the eighth anniversary of the September 11 terrorist
attacks on America.
Mayor Hannemann said, "The City is again holding this walk
to honor the memory of the people who perished in the 9/11
attacks, and to recognize our City's family of first-responders
as well as members of the armed forces who are protecting
our safety and well-being each and every day. This is an
occasion for Honolulu to remember the losses we suffered
and the acts of heroism summoned the day of the attacks."
The public is invited to participate in the walk, which
includes brief ceremonies at the Honolulu Police Department
headquarters and Honolulu Fire Department headquarters.
The Remembrance Walk concludes with a formal program at
Honolulu Hale.
Participants should gather by 6:30 p.m. on the front steps of
the Honolulu Police Department headquarters, at 801 South
Beretania Street. The marchers will proceed makai on Alapai
and South streets to the Honolulu Fire Department headquarters
on the corner of South and Queen streets. The procession then
moves on Halekauwila and mauka on Punchbowl to Honolulu Hale.
The formal program at Honolulu Hale will take place at the eternal
flame on the front lawn. The service will include a
wreath-laying and recognition of the Honolulu Emergency
Services Department and Department of Emergency Management.
There will be music by the Royal Hawaiian Band and a display
of emergency vehicles from the police, fire, and emergency
services departments. Mike Buck of KHVH Radio will serve as
master of ceremonies.
Participants are encouraged to bring flashlights. Free parking
will be available at the Frank F. Fasi Civic Center parking
structure (enter from Alapai or Beretania streets).
