A month-by-month guide to events in Kapiolani Park. Kapiolani Park is the largest city park on the island of Oahu and it is located in Honolulu, on the Diamond Head end of Waikiki.

January Kapiolani Park Events

EVENT: Pacific Islands Arts Festival

DATE: January 17-18, 2009
TIME: 9:00 am to 4:00 pm DESCRIPTION: Annual craft fair held every January that is larger then, but similar to the monthly Waikiki Art Fest. The event features booths set up in Kapiolani Park, near the Honolulu Zoo, with more then 100 artists and artisans selling their own handcrafted products. EVENT: Martin Luther King Day Unity Rally
DATE: January 19, 2009
TIME: 11:00 am
Takes place every year on Martin Luther King Day, after the Waikiki Martin Luther King Day Parade in Waikiki. Event features vendors selling African products, food booths, live entertainment, and inspirational speeches at the Kapiolani Park Bandstand. For more information call 808-395-4612.

February Kapiolani Park Events

Harold Chapson Memorial 8K Run
DATE: February 8, 2009
TIME: 7:00 am to 12:00 noon
ORGANIZER: Mid-Pacific Road Runners Club
This 8 kilometer running event usually begins at the Kapiolani Park Bandstand, continues around Diamond Head and through Kahala. Typically has about 200 runners and walkers. For more information call 808-295-6777.

EVENT: Hoomau 2009
DATE: February 15, 2009
VENUE: Waikiki Shell
Annual benefit concert for Oahu Hawaiian language immersion schools. The 2009 concert featured performances by Kealii Reichel, Waipuna, Kupaoa, Holunape, Ike Pono, Sudden Rush and the children of the 11 participating schools. For more information about this event call 808-551-3631.

EVENT: Kai Backyard Jam
DATE: February 22, 2009
TIME: 12:00 noon to 5:00 pm
VENUE: Kapiolani Park Bandstand
ORGANIZER: Coalition for a Drug-Free Hawaii
The 9th Annual Kai Backyard Jam took place on February 22, 2009 and it featured live entertainment by Kawao, Vaihi, Jamka and Ike Pono. This event produced by the Coalition for a Drug-Free Hawaii to celebrate Drug-Free Awareness Month. The purposes of the event is to raises public awareness about preventing substance abuse and to mobilize and unify schools, families, and communities in promoting healthy lifestyles. March Kapiolani Park Events

Straub/Kapiolani Women's 10K
DATE: March 1, 2009 (Sunday)
TIME: 7:00 to 9:00 am
For 32 years, women of all ages have come together in a celebration of friendship and good health at the Straub/Kapiolani Women's 10K running and walking event. The route for this 6.2 mile course begins at Kapiolani Park, goes through Diamond-Head and Kahala and back to Kapiolani Park For more information call 808-946-0346.

EVENT: Johnny Faerber 10K Run
DATE: March 8, 2009
TIME: Unknown
The start line for this 10k run is at the Waikiki Aquarium on the ocean side of Kalakaua Avenue in Kapiolani Park. The race is named in honor of former University of Hawaii coach Johnny Faerber. For more information call 808-295-6777.

EVENT: Stomp Out Lupus Walk
DATE: March 14, 2009
TIME: 5:30 pm
ORGANIZER: Lupus Hawaii
DESCRIPTION: The 5th Annual Stomp Out Lupus Walk will take place on Saturday, March 14, 2009. Distance is one 1.8 mile around Kapiolani Park starting at the Kapiolani Park Bandstand.

EVENT: Prince Kuhio Hoolaulea
DATE: March 28, 2009
TIME: 10:00 am to 4:00 pm
ORGANIZER: Hawaii Mali
This event is part of the month-long Prince Kuhio Celebration and it features native Hawaiian craft booths and demonstrations, local food, and live entertainment. Admission is free. In 2009 there was a parade honoring Prince Kuhio down Kalakaua Avenue in Waikiki from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm, followed by a Prince Kuhio Moonlight Concert in Kapiolani Park from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm. Event is organized every year by the Association of Hawaiian Civic Clubs and it's non-profit entity, Hawaii Maoli. For more information call 808-224-8068.

April Kapiolani Park Events

Hawaiian Scottish Festival
DATE: April 4-5, 2009
ORGANIZER: Hawaiian Scottish Association This annual event features a highland dance competition, demonstrations of swordplay, weaving, and fencing, live entertainment including piping, music, song, and dance, Celtic craft vendors, and food booths offering Scottish food and local food. The festival is usually held every year on the first weekend of April.

EVENT: "Your Easter" Service at Waikiki Shell
DATE: April 12, 2009
ORGANIZER: Unity Church of Hawaii
People of all faiths are invited to attend. Event is free. In 2009 the Reverend Sky St. John gave an inspiration sermon and live music was performed by Anita Hall, Kristian Lei, Zanuck Lindsey, Stefan Mitchell and Scott Wallace. EVENT: Honolulu AIDS Walk
DATE: April 19, 2009
TIME: 8:00 am to 10:00 am
ORGANIZER: Life Foundation
The 18th annual Honolulu AIDS Walk will take place Sunday, April 19, 2009. On site registration begins at 8:00 am and the walk itself begins at 9:00 am. After the walk there will be a health fair with live entertainment, health information, and food booths. The Honolulu AIDS Walk is a fundraiser for the Life Foundation, a Hawaii-based community AIDS prevention, awareness, and support group. Lei Day Celebration

2009 will be the 82nd annual Lei Day Celebration in Kapiolani Park.

EVENT: Filipino Fiesta
DATE: May 9, 2009 (Saturday)
PARADE TIME: 9:00 to 10:30 am
FIESTA TIME: 10:00 am to 5:00 pm
SANTACRUZAN TIME: 5:00 to 8:00 pm
ORGANIZER: Filipino Community Center
The 17th Annual Filipino Fiesta, Parade, and Santacruzan will take place on May 9 2009. The fiesta is really three events in one: (1) a historical-cultural parade from Fort DeRussy to Kapiolani Park in the morning, which will showcase marching bands, colorful floats, cultural groups, street dancers, and various business and community organizations. (2) An all-day Fiesta will follow the parade at the Kapiolani Park and will have a bevy of local and Philippine entertainers, cultural village showcasing the various regions of the Philippines, food booths, a keiki village, and business and non-profit booths. (3) In the evening, a Santacruzan festival will be held at the park which will feature Filipino beauties representing religious and historical personages, marching under colorful, flower-bedecked "arcos" in a candle-lit parade. Okinawan Festival
DATE: September 5-6, 2009
ORGANIZER: Hawaii United Okinawa Association
The 26th Annual Okinawan Festival will take place September 5-6, 2009. Proceeds from this event help support the HUOA mission of preserving, promoting, and sharing Okinawan culture with Hawaii visitors and residents.

EVENT: Hapa Haole Hula and Music Festival
DATE: September 13, 2008 (2009 date TBA)
VENUE: Kapiolani Park Bandstand
ORGANIZER: Pai Foundation
Event usually takes place after the Waikiki Aloha Festival Parade, The 2009 Aloha Festivals Floral Parade will take place on September 19, 2009, so I am guessing that will be the date of the 2009 Hapa Haole Hula and Music Festival in Kapiolani Park (but this still needs to be confirmed).

EVENT: Honolulu Century Bike Ride
DATE: September 27, 2009 (Sunday)
TIME: 6:15 am to 2:00 pm
ORGANIZER: Hawaii Bicycling League
The start line of the Honolulu Century Bike Ride is in the Waikiki Shell Parking Lot in Kapiolani Park and I believe the finish lines for all of the distances is also in Kapiolani Park. This is an event for many different levels of ability, with distances ranging from 20 miles to 100 miles. For more information about this event call 808-735-5756.

EVENT: Hawaii Lacrosse Invitational Tournament
DATE: October 24-26, 2009 (2009 date TBA)

The 19th Annual Hawaii Lacrosse Invitational Tournament is expected to take place in October of 2009 in Kapiolani Park, but the exact date has not yet been announced.

November Kapiolani Park Events

DATE: November 26, 2009
TIME: Registration begins at 6:30 am
Honolulu Marathon Clinic
DESCRIPTION: The 35th Annual Turkey Trot 10 Mile running event will begin and end at the Kapiolani Park Bandstand. Registrants are given a tongue depressor blade on which they write their name and their predicted finish time, down to Awards will be given to those who come closest to predicting their own finish times. No watches, headphones, or pacing devices are allowed. Entry fee is $3. The purpose of the Turkey Trot is not to finish first, it is to practice running the first 10 mile of a full marathon at a pace that will allow the body to finish the full marathon distance.

Honolulu Marathon Finish Line Activities

The start line for the Honolulu Marathon is on Ala Moana Beach Park and the finish line is near the Kapiolani Park Bandstand. in Kapiolani Park.

Weekly and Monthly Kapiolani Park Events

WEEKLY EVENT: Royal Hawaiian Band Concert
TIME: 2:00 - 3:00 pm
VENUE: Kapiolani Park Bandstand
The Royal Hawaiian Band performs a concert in the Kapiolani Park Bandstand Every Sunday afternoon from 2:00 to 3:00 pm.

MONTHLY EVENT: Waikiki Artfest
TIME: 9:00 am to 4:00 pm
More then 75 artisans and more then 100 at the January event. For more information call 808-696-6717.
