Battle of the Kahuku Shrimp Trucks
North Shore, Oahu, Hawaii
In November of 2005 the Turtle Bay Resort
awarded the title of "Best North Shore Shrimp Truck 2005"
to Macky's Kahuku Sweet Shrimp, in an event called
the Battle of the North Shore Shrimp Trucks, that was
part of the resort's first annual Seafood Festival.
The kick-off event in the Turtle Bay Resort's first
annual Seafood Festival was
the "Battle of the North Shore Shrimp Trucks"
on Friday, November 18, 2005. The heated shrimp cook-off
featured legendary North Shore shrimp truck chefs from
Giovanni's, Blue Water Shrimp, Fumi's Kahuku Shrimp Seafood,
Famous Kahuku Shrimp Truck, and Macky's Kahuku Sweet Shrimp.
All of the shrimp trucks prepared their signature menu items for
festival attendees, who then voted for their favorite
shrimp truck.
The winning shrimp truck was awarded a plaque, and its
signature shrimp dish will be featured on Turtle Bay
Resort's Palm Terrace menu.
The Turtle Bay Resort Seafood Festival proceeds will
benefit the Kahuku Library Book Mobile project.
Abid Butt, Vice President and General Manager of Turtle
Bay Resort, said "The resort is starting this tradition
to benefit our community. We loved to see our friends
and neighbors on the North Shore enjoy this great event,
especially since it benefits the Kahuku Library Book
Mobile project. Many of our employees' children attend
North Shore schools without extended library facilities.
The book mobile is going to be a wonderful addition to
our community."
"We are very excited and grateful to see our dreams of
a North Shore book mobile beginning to take shape," says
Fran Corcoran, Director of Kahuku Public and School
Library. "It addresses our primary goal in the North
Shore school system which is to get our kids reading.
We look forward to working with Turtle Bay Resort to
set the book mobile wheels in motion."
Festivities continued on Saturday, November 19, 2005 as the
resort presented the "Grand Seafood Invitational." A
wide variety of dishes incorporating fresh local
seafood, ingredients and produce was served along with
tapas and poke stations, and made-to-order paella.
Outside, under the stars and over-looking Kuilima Bay,
attendees were treated to live jazz and a special wine
tasting, champagne and elaborate appetizers.
As a special treat, guests were also invited to bid on
a guitar autographed by legendary Grammy-award winning
Kahuku High School graduate Jack Johnson.
"I'm happy to lend my continued support to the
project," said Johnson, "The book mobile is going
to be a great service to the North Shore community."
