A guide to January events on the island of Oahu in Hawaii,
including events in Waikiki, Honolulu events, and
events in other parts of Oahu. These events
typically occur in January, but you should check with
event organizers to confirm event dates. See also our

January Oahu Festivals and Celebrations
Martin Luther King Day Parade and Celebration
Annual Martin Luther King Day events on Oahu
include a morning parade down Kalakaua Boulevard
in Waikiki, an afternoon Martin Luther King Unity
Rally in Kapiolani Park following the parade,
and a Nagasaki Bell Ringing Ceremony and Procession
at the downtown Honolulu Hale (City Hall), usually the
Sunday night before Martin Luther King Day.
Moanikeala Hula Festival
Annual hula festival at the Polynesian Cultural Center on
the northeast coast of Oahu Island. The 19th Annual
Moanikeala Hula Festival took place on January 17, 2008
in the Pacific Theater at the Polynesian Cultural Center
in Laie. The event featured performers from 12 different
hula halau, including two from Japan.
Narcissus Festival
This January event sponsored by the Chinese Chamber
of Commerce of Hawaii takes place over several months.
The kick-off reception for the festival is typically
held in the fall, but most of the events take place
in the early months of the following year. Those events
include a Narcissus Festival Queen Pageant, a Narcissus Festival
Queen Coronation Ball, a "Night in Chinatown" celebration
at the Chinese Cultural Plaza, a China Goodwill Tour, and
public appearances by the royal court throughout the year.
The 60th Annual Narcissus Queen Pageant took place
January 10, 2009 at the Hawaii Theatre in Downtown Honolulu.
The Narcissus Queen Coronation Ball took place January 17, 2009
at the Hilton Hawaiian Village Resort.
Hawaii Square and Round Dance Festival
The 45th Annual Aloha State Square and Round Dance
Festival will take place January 28-30, 2010. The
three day festival will feature a Friday night Luau
in Kaneohe on the eastern windward side of Oahu and
evening dances at the Ala Wai Golf Course Ballroom
in Waikiki on Saturday and Sunday.
Lanikai Woes Day
All day Lanikai New Year's Day celebration,
parade, and running event sponsored by the
Lanikai Community Association. .

Hawaii State Legislature Opening Day Ceremony
The Hawaii State Legislature opens every January in a
public ceremony that includes pageantry, singing, and flowers.

Pacific Island Arts Festival Craft Fair
(no Web site)
Art and handcrafted products of approximately 100 Hawaii artists
and handcraft artisans, including all types of jewelry, clothing,
stained glass, ceramics, quilts and bags, wood products, soaps
and candles. This is a larger version of the monthly arts and
crafts fair that takes place in Kapiolani Park once a month and
it replaces that event every January. The 10th Annual
Pacific Islands Art Festival took place in January of 2009
in Waikiki's Kapiolani Park.
Quadrantids Meteor Shower
This strong January meteor shower can be viewed
between January 1-5 but the best date and time
to view is on January 3, for about eight hours,
beginning at about midnight.

January Oahu Sports Events
Ala Wai Challenge
The 24th Annual Ala Wai Challenge Canoe Races and
Hawaiian Games took place on Sunday, January 25, 2009
from 8:00 am to 1:30 pm. Ala Wai Challenge is an outdoors
sports event which encourages team work and community
building within the visitor industry by promoting Hawaiian
culture among visitors and residents. The event features canoe
races, traditional Hawaiian games, a Hawaiian marketplace,
live Hawaiian music, and other entertainment. Every year
the Ala Wai Challenge also honors two Hawaii water sports legends.
Hawaiian games at the Ala Wai Challenge include
ulu maika (similar to bowling),
oo ihe (spear throwing), huki kaula (tug of war),
and quarter mile outrigger canoe races on the Ala Wai canal.
Usually takes place the last weekend in January.
Aloha Gymfest
Annual girl's gymnasian camp on the
windward side of Oahu.
Bosetti 10K Run
Annual 10 kilometer running with a route
that begins near Sandy Beach. Usually takes
place early in the morning on
New Year's Day (January 1).
HURT 100 Endurance Trail Race
The HURT 100 is a 100 mile off-road
running race on the Makiki-Tantalus trail system
in Honolulu. Runners spend up to 36 hours on the trails,
and about 12 of those hours are in the dark.
The Hurt 100 typically takes place in January and it
is organized by the Hawaiian Ultra Running Team (HURT)
The 2010 HURT 100 Off-Road Trail Race will take place
January 16-17, 2010.
Morey World Bodyboarding Championship
Annual bodyboarding competition held
at the Banzai Pipeline surf break
on the north shore of Oahu. Held
every year, usually in early January.
Pipeline Bodysurfing Classic
The Pipeline Body Surfing Classic is a winter bodysurfing
competition held at the Banzai Pipeline on the north shore
of Oahu. The event weas originally hosted by the City and
County of Honolulu and later it was hosted by
the North Shore Bodysurfing Club in Haleiwa.
The first Pipeline Bodysurfing Classic took place in February of 1971.
The event took place in 2008 but the City and county of Honolulu
denied the event a permit in 2007 and 2009.
Sony Open Golf Tournament
The Sony Open is the first full-field event, and the
second overall event on the PGA Tour. It is held every January at the
Waialae Country Club, a golf club located a few miles east
of Waikiki, adjacent to the Kahala Resort and Spa.
Usually held the second week in January.

January Oahu Events No Longer Happening
Hula Bowl Football Game
(1960-2008)
The Hula Bowl was played at Honolulu Stadium from 1960-1974,
at Aloha Stadium from 1975-1997, The War Memorial Stadium on
Maui 1998-2005, and the Aloha Stadium 2006-2008. The
Hula Bowl was canceled in 2009, some say due to a lack of interest,
and the future of the event is not clear.
Turtle Bay Championship Golf Tournament
(2001-2008)
The Turtle Bay Championship was a golf tournament on the
PGA Champions Tour from 2001 through 2008. The tournament
was founded in 1987 as the Kaanapali Classic and it
became the Turtle Bay Classic in 2001 when it moved from
Maui to the North Shore of Oahu.
