Introduction to the Ala Wai Challenge
Canoe Races and Hawaiian Games

A general introduction to the Ala Wai Challenge, a canoe racing and Hawaiian games competition on the Ala Wai Canal in Honolulu. The event takes place every January and it is a benefit for the Waikiki Community Center.

The Ala Wai Challenge is an outrigger canoe race combined with a traditional Hawaiian games competition. The event also features live Hawaiian music, a Hawaiian marketplace, and delicious food. The Ala Wai Challenge takes place every January at Ala Wai Community Park in Honolulu, usually from about 8:00 a.m. until about 2:00 p.m.. The park is located at 2015 Kapiolani Boulevard, on the shore of the Ala Wai Canal, just across the canal from the Waikiki hotel district.

2009 Ala Wai Challenge - Photos and Results
2009 Ala Wai Challenge Canoe Race The 2009 Ala Wai Challenge was the 24th annual event and it took place on January 25, 2009. The water sports honorees that year were Canoe builder Bobby Puakea and surfer Clyde Aikau. Live entertainment that year was provided by the Royal Hawaiian Band, Herb Ohta, Jr., Darren Benitez, and others.

2007 Ala Wai Challenge
The 22nd Annual Ala Wai Challenge took place on January 28, 2007 and the two watersports legends honored that year were Peter Cole and Fred Van Dyke.

    More About the Ala Wai Challenge
    The Ala Wai Challenge is an outdoors sports event which encourages team work and community building within the visitor industry by promoting Hawaiian culture among visitors and residents. It is a benefit for the Waikiki Community Center and all of the musicians and officials are volunteers. The Ala Wai Challenge received a 2008 "Keep It Hawaii" Lehua Maka Noe Award for Perpetuating the Hawaiian Culture award from the Hawaii Tourism Authority
