The History of Waikiki

Information about the history of Waikiki on the island of Oahu in Hawaii.

Waikiki Beach in 1930

Waikiki Bay was created when Diamond Crater erupted approximately 150,000 years ago.

Water flowing from the Koolau Mountains to Waikiki through the Manoa and Palolo Valleys via three large streams made Waikiki a swampy wetland.

The streams were the Apuakehau, which emptied into the ocean where the Moana Surfrider Hotel is today, the Kuekaumahi, which flowed along what is today Kapahulu Avenue, and the Piianaio which flowed into the ocean where Fort DeRussy is today.

Between 800 and 1200 AD some of the first Polynesian immigrants to Hawaii settled in Waikiki.

In 1450 Oahu's King Mailikukahi moved the capitol of Oahu from the west Coast to Waikiki.

In the mid 1700's Maui's King Kahekili conquered Oahu. He remained on Maui and made his son Kalanikapule the ruler of Oahu.

King Kamehameha of the Big Island of Hawaii wanted to unite all the islands under one ruler and after taking Maui from King Kahekili he invaded Oahu and defeated Kalanikapule in a famous battle at Nuuanu Pali. By 1795 King Kamehameha I had united all of the islands into one kingdom.

King Kalakaua moves the capitol of Oahu from Waikiki to Honolulu and Waikiki becomes a place of healing and recreation for Hawaii's royalty.
