Facts About the USS Missouri Battleship
Photo 3 of 15

The USS Missouri Battleship was launched on January 29, 1944. The ship is approximately 890 feet long and 110 feet wide. When it was in active service it could reach a speed of 33 knots (61 kilometers) per hour. The ship is most famous for being the site of the formal ceremony for the Japanese surrender at the end of World War II. That ceremony took place on September 2, 1945.

The USS Missouri served during the Korean War before she was decommissioned for the first time in February of 1955. For approximately 30 years, the ship was a visitor attraction on the U.S. west coast, in the city of Bremerton, Washington. All four of the Iowa class battleships were reactivated in the 1980's and the USS Missouri served in the Persian Gulf War in 1991. The ship was decommissioned for the last time on March 31, 1992, and she was transferred to Pearl Harbor to become a memorial in June of 1998.
