South Pacific Cultural Center in Waikiki

The Kodak Hula Show and the Pleasant Hawaiian Hula Show are no longer staging free hula performances near the Waikiki Shell, but now there is a new Polynesian show and bazaar at that location on the island of Oahu.

On February 15, 2006 Maikai Enterprises opened an arts and crafts market and cultural center naer the Waikiki Shell in Honolulu, on the island of Oahu. It has been named the "South Pacific Cultural Center", and it will feature a Hawaiian buffet dinner and Polynesian show at night and a swap-meet like Polynesian bazaar and craft demonstrations during the day. The center will feature the cultures of Hawaii, Fiji, Tonga, Samoa, the Maori, and other parts of Polynesia.

During the day there will be vendor booths and demonstrations of hula and Polynesian, games, coconut husking, fire making, basket weaving, tiki carving, and Polynesian crats. There will be 20 to 50 booths in a 2.5 acre area. The vendors are expected to be similar to those at the International Marketplace.

Evening entertainment at the center will begin in March of 2006. A Hawaiian buffet dinner will be served at 6 pm that will probably cost about $30, and there will be a Polynesian show from 7 to 8:30 pm. Chief Sielu Avea, formerly a entertaining and amusing fire dancer at Polynesian Cultural Center's Horizons show, is heading up the entertainment. He also conducted the tours atthe Macadamia Nut Farm near Kualoa Regional Park.

Admission to the grounds is free. The center will be closed on evenings when other events are booked at the Waikiki Shell. For more information contact the South Pacific Cultural Center at 808-922-3705.
