The Waikiki War Memorial Natatorium is a World War I memorial
on the Diamond Head end of Waikiki, near San Souci Beach and the Waikiki Aquarium.
It was conceived as a combination war memorial and athletic facility,
with a 100 meter by 40 meter salt water pool that was used years ago for
military athletic training. Some of the most famous swimmers from the past
have also gone swimming in this pool, including Duke Kahanamoku, Buster Crabbe,
and Johnny Weissmuller. The pool was closed in 1980 because it was beginning
to deteriorate.
