History of the Manoa Valley Theatre
A group of University of Hawaii Theater Department
students founded an adult theater organization in 1969 called
the Hawaii Performing Arts Company. For the first
couple of years their performances were in small spaces
in Downtown Honolulu. By 1971 the theater company
needed a larger venue and for the next twelve years they performed
in the 100 seat Manoa Valley Chapel of the Kawaiahao Church.
In the 1980's about $1 million was raised to acquire a new
theater and in 1987 the theater group dedicated their new
150-seat theater in the Manoa Valley and their theater
group began operating under the same name as their new
theater, the Manoa Valley Theatre.
