Manana Island
aka Rabbit Island

Manana Island is a small islet located off the eastern windward shore of the island of Oahu, between Makapuu Point and Waimanalo. This photo was taken from Kaupo Beach.

Rabbit Island

Manana Island is approximately 3/4 mile off of Kaupo Beach, just northwest of Makapuu Point on the island of Oahu. The islet is also known as Rabbit Island. Some people think it is because the island is shaped like a rabbit's head or body, but it is actually becaue rabbits were raised on the island until 1994. The rabbits were removed at that time because started destroying the native ecosystem of the island, which is an important seabird breeding area.

Manana Island is a 63 acre volcanic tuff cone island. It is about 2300 feet long and 4200 feet wide. rises to about 360 feet at its highest point. There is a small beach on the southwest side of the island that is approximately thirty feet wide.

Today the island is a protected bird sanctuary and during the spring and summer the island is a breeding area for thousands of sooty terns, brown noddies., wedge-tailed shearwaters, bulwers petrels, adn red-tailed tropic birds. Manana Island is a protected bird sanctuary and therefore it is not legal to land there unless you have permission from the Hawaii Department of Land Natural Resources.
