Leeward Oahu Self-Guided Tour

This tour of the leeward (west) side of the Hawaiian Island of Oahu
begins just west of Pearl Harbor on Oahu's south shore, and it
continues northwest up the leeward coast, ending just south of Kaena Point
at Yokohama Bay. Note that there is only a primitive road beyond
this point.
You can either drive staight out Farrington Highway to the coast and begin this tour at Barber's Point Harbor, or you can take Fort Weaver Road off of Farrington Highway and also explore Ewa Beach, One'ula Beach, Nimitz Beach, and Barber's Point Beach Park. The leeward side of an island is the side sheltered from the wind, meaning the wind does not blow onto that shore. The leeward side of Oahu is the dry side, and therefore it does not have nearly as much tropical vegetation as the windward (east) side. Leeward Oahu has some of the best surfing beaches in the world, including Yokohama Bay Beach, Makua Beach, Kea'au Beach, Makaha Beach (are you still allowed to surf there?), and Mauna Lahilanhi Beach.
