Kumu Kahua Theatre
Honolulu, Oahu, Hawaii

The Kumu Kahua Theatre is located in downtown Honolulu and it features plays written by local Hawaii playwrights. The performances typically feature themes and stories about the local people of Hawaii. The theatre is sometimes just called Kumu. The theater's motto is "Plays About Life in Hawaii. Plays by Hawaii's playwrights. Plays for Hawaii's People".

The Kumu Kahua Theatre is an intimate 100-seat playhouse in downtown Honolulu featuring plays written, acted, and directed by some of Hawaii's most talented artists. The theater group was founded in 1971 by University of Hawaii professor Dennis Carroll to produce locally-written experimental plays. In 1982 the group obtained non-profit status, and in 1994 the Hawaii State Legislature designated the building at 46 Merchant Street as the playhouse for the Kumu Kahua Theatre.

The founder of the group, Dennis Carroll, served as artistic director for many years. Dando Kluever was artistic director in the 1980's and the current director is Harry Wong III.

In addition to producing plays, the Kumu Kahua Theatre offers acting and writing classes and they work with the University of Hawaii at Manoa to sponsor an annual playwrighting contest with awards in three categories:
  1. Hawaii Prize
Plays set in Hawaii or involving some aspect of the Hawaii Experience. Open to both Hawaii residents and non-residents.

  2. Hawaii Prize
Play set in the Pacific Islands or the Pacific Rim, or involving some aspect of the Pacific Rim or Pacific/Asian-American experience.

  3. Resident Prize
Plays about any topic written by Hawaii residents.
The Kumu Kahua Theatre is funded in part by the Hawaii State Foundation for Culture and the Arts. For the current season's performances see Kumu Kahua Theatre Play Schedule
