History of the Kualoa Ranch
Oahu, Hawaii

Information about the history of the Kualoa Ranch on the windward side of the island of Oahu in Hawaii.

Kualoa means "long back" and the ranch was given this name because of its distinctive mountain peaks that surround its valleys. The former name of the Kualoa Ranch area was Paliku. The name Kualoa Ranch Ltd was officially registered by Julia Judd Swanzy.

Dr. Gerrit P. Judd purchased the Kualoa Ranch lands from King Kamehameha III in 1950 and the property ownership still remains with that family.

The Kualoa Sugar Mill was built in 1863 by Charles H. Judd and Samuel G. Wilder. The mill was closed in 1870 because there was not enough rain in this area to sustain a sugar cane farm.

Today Kualoa is a working ranch with 600 head of cattle and more then 100 horses. Other farming ventures on the ranch include aquaculture ponds, flower fields, and plant nursery operations. The Kualoa Nursery and Gardens is located next to Tropical Farms (on the main highway?).

Kualoa Ranch also offers tours and field trips to local schools, including a petting zoo, children's horseback riding, aquaculture tours, hiking tours, a food sources tour, a roping course, and camping trips.

In addition to adventure activities and tours for individuals and families, the Kualoa Ranch is available for weddings, group tours, and other special events.
