Kapapa Island
Kaneohe Bay, Oahu, Hawaii

This low island in Kaneohe Bay is 1200 feet long and 500 feet wide. It is an historic spot with a fishing shrine and a heiau. The island is open to the public and can be reached by boat from the Kaneohe Fishing Pier or by Kayak from Kahaluu Beach Park.

Located South of Mokolii Island about two miles off of Heeia Pier. The island is about 3 acres in size and it has vegetation, including introduced ironwood and Casurania (sp) trees.

Kapapa island was designated a National Historic Place in 1972 because several small midden sites and burials from 1750 to 1790 ad were found here.

It is located on an elevated area of hard limestone on the seaward edge of a barrier reef. The island and the platform under it are formed of lithified dune material which was deposited when the sea was much lower.

The side of Kapapa island facing the sea has two beaches, one of which is usually covered with water. The other beach is about 3 to 6 feet above sea level.

Kapapa Island was once the site of a Hawaiian heiau and a fishing shrine, also called a koa.

Today the island is mostly used by fishermen as an overnight campsite.

Kapapa island on the barrier reef and Kekepa Island near the Mokapu Peninsula are sand dunes that have changed to stone (lithified).
