Kaohikaipu Island
Oahu, Hawaii

Kaohikaipu Island is a small rocky islet located just south of Manana island off the eastern windward coast of the island of Oahu. This photo was taken from Kaupo Beach.

Kaohikaipu Island has been designated as a State of Hawaii protected bird refuge and access is restricted to protect nesting birds and their habitat. Three species of bird nest on the island: the Wedge-Tailed Shearwater, Bulwer's Petrel, and the Black Noddy.

In 1993 a research project was initiated to attract the Laysan Albatross to Kaohikaipu Island. Albatross decoys were placed around the island to encourage the birds to nest.

Kaohikaipu Island is also known as Black Rock and sometimes as Turtle Island.
