Kaneohe Marine Base

There are two Marine Corps facility on the eastern windward
side of the island of Oahu in Hawaii:
Marine Corps Base Hawaii and Marine Corp
Air Facility Hawaii. Both of facilities are located
on Kaneohe Bay about 12 miles northeast of Honolulu.

1918: President Wilson Established army reserve near Ulupau Crater
1939: Navy started using Mokapu Peninsula as a seaplane base
When? Eventually Naval Air Station Kaneohe Bay was established
1941: Kaneohe Air Station was first base attacked by Japanese
They lost 18 sailors, 1 civilian, and 24 of 36 aircraft
There is a commemorative plaque on Reed Road
John Finn received Medal of Honor for Heroic Action in the Pacific
After WWII Mokapu Pensinsula was put on caretaker status
1951: Marines decided to take over the base
1952: Marine Corps Air Station Kaneohe Bay was established
First commanding officer was Colonel Frank G. Daily
