Kaneohe Marine Base
Oahu, Hawaii

There are two Marine Corps facility on the eastern windward side of the island of Oahu in Hawaii: Marine Corps Base Hawaii and Marine Corp Air Facility Hawaii. Both of facilities are located on Kaneohe Bay about 12 miles northeast of Honolulu.

Facts About the Kanoehe Marine Base
  • Located about 12 miles northeast of Honolulu
  • Sits on the end of the Makapu Peninsula in Kaneohe
  • Nearest cities are Kaneohe and Kailua

    History of Establishing the Kaneohe Marine Base
  • 1918: President Wilson Established army reserve near Ulupau Crater
  • 1939: Navy started using Mokapu Peninsula as a seaplane base
  • When? Eventually Naval Air Station Kaneohe Bay was established
  • 1941: Kaneohe Air Station was first base attacked by Japanese
  • They lost 18 sailors, 1 civilian, and 24 of 36 aircraft
  • There is a commemorative plaque on Reed Road
  • John Finn received Medal of Honor for Heroic Action in the Pacific
  • After WWII Mokapu Pensinsula was put on caretaker status
  • 1951: Marines decided to take over the base
  • 1952: Marine Corps Air Station Kaneohe Bay was established
  • First commanding officer was Colonel Frank G. Daily
