The Iolani Barracks was designed by architect Theodore Heuck and built in 1871 to house the Hawaiian Royal Guard. The building consists of a central courtyard, a mess hall, kitchen, dispensary, and sleeping quarters.

The barracks were originally located on the site of the current Hawaii State Capitol, but in 1965 the structure was moved block by block to its current location on the grounds of the Iolani Palace. The building is now the home of the Iolani Palace Shop, the ticket office for tours, a video theater, and membership office.
