Local Hawaii artist Rocky Ka'iouliokahikikolo'Ehu Jensen
was first approached about creating a memorial to
fallen ancient Hawaiian warriors in 1978, but the project did
not actually begin until several years later, and it was
finally completed in 1999.
The memorial is carved out of five eight-foot lehua logs
with the face of Hawaiian war god Kunuiakea - aka Ku -
carved on the face of each log.
The name of the memorial is "Na Lehua Helelei" which
means "scattered lehua blossoms" in Hawaiian (petals
of the lehua flower represent drops of blood from
fallen warriors).
