The large grassy area in the center of this picture is Kapiolani Park and the large crater behind it is Diamond Head Crater. You can see there is a long stretch of beach with no shops or hotels between Waikiki, which is to the left of this picture, and Diamond Head Crater. The fifteen minute walk from this area to the center of Waikiki makes the Diamond head hotels more desirable for some people and less desirable for others.

Diamond Head Hotels

The cluster of buildings on the far right side of the above picture are several hotels and a few high rise condominums that occasionally have vacation units for rent. Hotels in this area include the New Otani Kaimana Beach Hotel, the Diamond Head Beach Hotel, and the luxurious W Honolulu Hotel. Note that it takes about fifteen minutes to walk from the hotels in this area to central Waikiki.

Diamond Head Restaurants
There are not many restaurants in this area and many of those that do exist are high quality but expensive. Examples are Michel's at the Colony Surf and the Diamond Head Grill, and the Hau Tree Lanai. There are a couple of budget cafes in this area, but most Hawaii visitors staying in the Diamond Head area walk into Waikiki for meals.

Other Attractions in the Diamond Head Area
Some of the most popular attractions on the the Diamond Head end of Waikiki beach are the Waikiki Aquarium, the Honolulu Zoo, San Souci Beach, and Kapiolani Park. From that area is is only a short drive to Diamond Head Crater State Monument.

Concerts and Theaters in the Diamond Head Area
The Waikiki Shell outdoor theater is within easy walking distance of the Diamond Head area and you might even hear Waikiki Shell concerts off in the distance from your hotel room. Kapiolani Park, the largest city park in Hawaii, is right across the street from the Diamond Head area hotels. That park is a popular venue for many of Honolulu's best festivals and events. The annual Diamond Head Crater Celebration is a concert inside Diamond Head Crater that in the past has featured world class entertainers such as the Steve Miller Band, Linda Ronstadt, Yvonne Elliman, and Earth, Wind, and Fire. On many weekends free movies are projected onto a huge outdoor screen at nearby Queen's Surf Beach at an event known as Sunset at the Beach. The Honolulu Zoo and the Waikiki Aquarium are venues for special events such as concerts, fund raiser dinners, and special tours. Diamond Head area visitors can also see live theater performances at the historic Diamond Head Theater on Makapuu Avenue.
