Oahu Bird Sanctuaries

Information about bird sanctuaries on Oahu Island in Hawaii.

Enchanted Lake Bird Sanctuary
Good spot to watch for red-footed boobies, great frigate birds, red-tailed tropic birds, hawaiian duck, and plover. Located off of Keolu Drive at the end of Kiukee Place in Kailua on the eastern windward side of Oahu.

James C. Campbell National Wildlife Refuge
- Kahukuku - bird populaion gets huge in winter - stilt, kilt, moorhen - birds fly for 6 days to breed in hawaii - tours twice a week during part of the year - Video: http://www.truveo.com/birds-gone-wild-oahu-wildlife-refuge/id/870791573 - Article: http://archives.starbulletin.com/2005/10/16/news/story02.html - Refuge can be visited from September to mid-February when the stilts are not nesting. To reserve a tour call 808-637-6330. - Migratory birds who visit the refuge every year include Northern Pintails, Lesser Scaup, Wandering Tattlers, Ruddy Turnstones, Sanderlings and Bristle-thighed Curlews.

Kawai Nui Marsh
This 800 acre wetlands area near the east Oahu town of Kailua is the largest wetlands area in the state of Hawaii.

Paiko Lagoon Wildlife Sanctuary
- Established in 1981 - East Oahu - Next to Kuliouou Valley (between Kahala and Hawaii Kai) - Hawaiian Stilt and other migratory birds - near Kuliouou Beach Park (narrow beach, shallow reef flat) - surfer entry point for Tunas, Manatan's, and Turtles - Includes all of the state of Hawaii owned land adjacent to the Paiko Lagoon and all of the water areas within the Paiko Lagoon. - Forbidden to remove, disturb, injure, kill, or possess any form of plant or wildlife. no fishing allowed. Also forbidden to introduce any form of plant or wildlife.

Pouhala Marsh Wildlife Sanctuary

Oahu's Island Bird Sanctuaries
The islands off Oahu's eastern windward coast are a good place to watch for Frigatebirds, Boobies, Noddies, Terns, Tropicbirds, and Shearwaters.
