This flat, 18 hole, 145 acre golf course is It has views of Diamond Head Crater,
the Koolau Mountains, and the skyline of Waikiki.
At one time the Guiness Book of World Records
rated it as busiest golf course in the United States.
180,000 to 225,000 rounds of golf are played there every year.
History of the Ala Wai Golf Course
The original 9 hole Ala Wai Golf Course was designed by Donald
Mackay and it opened for the first time on September 13, 1931.
At that time it was the only municipal golf course in Hawaii.
The second nine holes opened on July 10, 1937, and the clubhouse
as built in 1948. In 1989 seven of the front nine holes
were redesigned by Nelson and Right.
When the course first opened in 1931 it was run by the Hawaii
Territorial Fair Commission. When that commissioned was abolished
upon Hawaii's statehood, the City and County of Honolulu took
over the land. There has always been a great deal of pressure
to development valuable the golf course land with hotels and condominiums
but so far, Honolulu has resisted.
