In 1949, Walter Dillingham's son Lowell

the largest shopping center in the world
on fifty acres of land across the street from Ala Moana Park.
Ten years later, in 1959 the two story Ala Moana
Shopping center opened. The shopping mall cost $25
million to build and when it opened it had 87 stores
and 4000 parking spaces, making it the largest
shopping center in the world.
The center was extensively renovated in the 1990's
and it is being renovated again in 2007 and 2008.
