Dynasties of the Hawaiian Kingdom

The Hawaiian Kingdom has had eight rulers, seven kings and one queen. The first five kings were from the Kamehameha dynasty, the next king was appointed by the Hawaiian legislature, and the last king and queen were part of the Kalakaua dynasty.

Kamehameha Dynasty
The House of Kamehameha ruled Hawaii from 1810, when King Kamehameha united the Hawaiian Islands until King Kamehameha V died in 1872. King Kamehameha V was the last Hawaiian ruler from the Kamehameha dynasty. He never married and he died without having any children.

King William Lunalilo
When King Kamehameha V died without naming an heir to the thrown, the legislature of the Hawaiian Kingdom appointed William Lunalilo to be king, according to procedures in the constitution of the Hawaiian Kingdom.

Kalakaua Dynasty
When King William Lunalilo died in 1874 without naming a heir to the thrown, the legislature of the Hawaiian Kingdom appointed David Kalakaua to be Hawaii. The House of Kalakaua ruled Hawaii until Queen Liliuokalani was overthrown in 1893.

Kawananakoa Dynasty
The House of Kawananakoa never ruled Hawaii, but it is historically recognized that they would have been heirs to the thrown of Hawaii if the Hawaiian Kingdom had not been overthrown.
