Regions of Molokai

A directory of airports on the island of Molokai.

West Side of Molokai
- Hoolehua Airport (west/center inland location)
- Kepuhi Beach (in front of the Kaluakoi Resort)
-Pohaku Mauliuli Beach (aka Make Horse)
- Papohaku Beach (3 miles long)
- Kaluakoi Resort (3 condos but hotel and golf course are closed
- Kaluakoi Golf Course (now closed)

Central Molokai
- Kapuaiwai Coconut Grove (planted in the 1860's)
-Ironwood Hills Municipal Golf Course (9 holes)
- Kaunakakai (1 street town: Ala Malama Avenue)

East Side of Molokai

-Manae (eastern quarter of Molokai is called "Manae")
-Our Lady of Seven Sorrows Church (built by Father Damien)
-Mapulehu (14 mi east of Kaunakakai)
-Kawili Beach
-Halawa Valley (oldest known Hawaiian settlement on Molokai)
-Halawa Stream runs through the Halaway Valley
-Valley was well populated before the f1946 tidal wave

North aka "Backside" of Molokai
-This area has the huge cliffs Molokai is famous for
-world's highest sea cliffs
-highest point is 2600 feet from top to sea level
-few people live here - supplies can only be brought in by boat
-Kamakou Preserve (2774 acres)
-Monthly hikes are available, reserve with Nature Conservancy on molokai
-Kamakou has a boardwalk

Kalaupapa Peninsula
-Makanalua Peninsula (10 square miles)
-District 1: Kalaupapa (west base of the peninsula)
-District 2: Kalawao (east base of the peninsula)
-District 3: Makanalua
-Switchback Trail down 1600 foot high cliffs into Kalaupapa
-Mule rides and hiking
-Kalaupapa settlement is at the edge (what edge?)
-At far edge is district of Kalawao
-Kalawao: Saint Philomena Church (built by brother Bertrand in 1872)
-Father Damien's gtrave is at Kalawao but in 1936 he remains were exhumed and returned to Belgium at requst of their govt
-A relic was returned to molokai in 1995 and vault was build
-Kewalo now unhabited but it is well maintained
-Llio Point is northwest corner of the island
