A guide to events on island of Maui in Hawaii that typically take place in the month of January.

January Running Events on Maui

Maui Oceanfront Marathon
The Inaugural Maui Oceanfront Marathon will take place on January 25, 2009. The start line for the point-to-point will be in Wailea and the finish line will be in Lahaina.

Maui Paradise Marathon
The Inaugural Maui Paradise Marathon will take place January 11, 2009 in the southeast Maui town of Kihei.

Maui 15k and 5k Run
This annual 15 kilometer and 5 kilometer Maui running event usually takes place in mid-January. The point-to-point course begins in Napili and ends in Lahaina.

January Golf Tournaments on Maui

SBS Championship Golf Tournament
In 2010 the sponsor of the formerly Mercedes-Benz Championship was changed and the tournament was renamed the SBS Championship. The tournament is usually a week long with professional practice rounds taking place on Monday and Tuesday, a Pro-Am tournament on Wednesday, and the professional tournament Thursday through Sunday. Tickets are available to the general public and the event can also be watched on television.

Wendy's Champions Skins Golf Game
In 2008 the Wendy's Champions Skins Golf tournament was moved from the Wailea Golf Club to Kaanapali Beach. Skins games are played with four two-person teams in an alternate shot format.

Other January Maui Events

Martin Luther King Day on Maui
Martin Luther King day events on Maui in the past included a Maui Peace March in Kahului from Maui Community College to Hoaloha Park that was presented by the African American Heritage Foundation of Maui. The parade is usually followed by a large picnic in the park with live music and dancing.

Miss Maui Pageant
The annual Miss Maui and Miss Ulalena Pageant and Scholarship Program takes place every January at the Maui Theatre of Ulalena in Lahaina.

Maui Eevents in Either January or February

Lahaina Chinese New Year Celebration
This annual celebration taks place in either January or February, and it usually includes Chinese lion dancers parading through the shops of Front Street on Friday and a Lahaina Chinese New Year Street Festival on Front Street on Saturday faturing live music, firecracker displays, martial arts demonstrations, and booths offering arts and crafts, ethnic foods, and activities.

Former January Maui Events

Hula Bowl Maui
Independently administered post-season invitational college football game held in Hawaii since 1946. The Hula Bowl began as the Hula Bowl All Star Classic and it took place first at the old Honolulu Stadium, then at the Aloha Stadium in Honolulu, and between 1998 and 2005 it was held at the War Memorial Stadium in Wailuku, Maui. Hula Bowl week events and activities on Maui featured opportunities to meet Hawaii's collegiate all-star football players from Aina and Kai teams include at a luau, at a surf classic, at a Heisman golf tournament and at autograph sessions at the Makena Resort. The Hula Bowl moved back to the Aloha Stadium on Oahu in 2006 for the 60th Anniversary Hula Bowl. In 2006 the official name of the event was changed to the "Cornerstone Bancard Hula Bowl".

Mercedes-Benz Golf Championships
An annual golf tournament restricted to golfers who won at least one of the events on the previous year's PGA tour. The tournament is usually played the last weekend in January and it was held on the Plantation Golf Course of the Kapalua Resort from 1999 through 2009. Before the event moved to Hawaii in 1999 it was played in Nevada and Southern California. The first ever event took place in 1953.
