Introduction to the Maalaea Resort Area
South Central Maui

Maalaea is a harbor community and fishing village on the south central coast of Maui, near the Isthmus of Maui, just west of the Kealia Pond National Wildlife Reserve and the town of Kihei. Maalaea Harbor is a departure point for whalewatching cruises, sportfishing expeditions, and Molokini snorkeling and diving tours and it is the home of the Pacific Whale Foundation and the Maui Ocean Center Aquarium.

One of the first things you will probably notice about Maalaea.... its windy! This part of Maui's south central valley is one of the windiest places on the entire island.Maalaea is situated between the two mountains that make up the island of Maui, and the winds blowing between those two mountains are funneled between them, they gain momentum, and et get up to 25 to 30 miles per hour by they time they arrive in Maalaea. All of that wind makes Maalaea a great place for windsurfing, but the wind can be a bit much when you're trying to sunbathe on Maalaea Beach. That's probablay the reasonfd all of the condominium complexes in Maalaea have their own swimming pools, even though theya re situated directly on the waterfront.

People come to Maalaea for boating activities and long walks or jogs on the beach with the wind blowing in your hair. There are plenty of things to do in Maalaea but if you're looking for nightlife or a large resort with many organized activities you will not find it there. In fact there are no hotels at all in Maalaea and only a handful of restaurants, all in the harbor. All of Maalaea's accommodations are in a string of condominiums just south of Maalaea Harbor.
