Cycling Down Mount Haleakala
Maui, Hawaii

Cycling down Mount Haleakala, from the summit to sea level is a popular activity on Maui but it should not be attempted by inexperienced or infrequent cyclists. Note that the National Parks Service no longer allows downhill cycling tours to begin inside Haleakala National Park, but the last I heard tour operators were still allowed to conduct tours that begin outside the park.

Cycle to the Sun
The course fo this annual race from sea level in Paia to the summit of Mount Haleakala rises 10,023 vertical feet over 36 miles. The race was held in the 1980's and after several years of not being held, it was resurrected in 2001.
