General information and facts about the island of Lanai in Hawaii.

  • Length: 18 miles

  • Highest point: Lanaihale (3,370 feet above sea level).
  • Visitors per Year: Approximately 75,000
  • Separated from Molokai by the Kalohi Channel
  • Separated from Lanai by athe Auau Channel

    Lanai use to be known as: "The Pineapple Isle" but since very little pineapple is grown on the island, is is now frequently called the "Secluded Island".

    While 98% of the island is owned by Castle and Cooke (Dole), pineapple is no longer grown on the island. the remaining 2% of Lanai is owned by the state of Hawaii. For many years, most of Lanai was dedicated to growing pineapples, but the thousands of acres of pineapple fields are gone. Today there are less then 100 acres of pineapple fields on the island.

    The island is now has two luxury resorts, world class golf courses, hunting, clay shooting, mountain biking, and snorkeling.

    The only airport is in Lanai City.

    Two luxury hotels:
  • Manele Bay Hotel (beach and water sports)
  • Lodge at Koele (inland, horseback riding, mountain bike)

    Population 3100 - almost everybody lives in Lanai City.

    Lanai High Physical Fitness Team is a multiple state champion and has won several national championships.

    On January 1, 1994, Microsoft's Bill Gates erented the entire island for his wedding to Melinda French.

    Average rainfall: 50 inches

    Size: 18 miles wide by 13 miles long. It is the smallest of the six largest Hawaiian Islands. It is 141 square miles in size and has 47 miles of coastline.

    The "Garden of the Gods" is located in the northern part of the island. it is a lunar-like landscape of volcanic rock that erosion has turned into art.

    Hulopoe Bay Marine Reserve is an excellent Scuba diving spot, and a good place to spot spinner dolphins.

    East of Lanai City is the 3366 foot Lanaihale rainforest. Lanai's highest point is Mount Lanaihale, which is 3370 feet (1027 meters) high.
