Poaiwa Petroglyphs
Lanai, Hawaii
Information aboutthe Poaiwa Petroglyphs
on the island of Lanai in Hawaii. I have also
seen these called the Puaiwa Petroglyphs,
and I am not certain which spelling is correct.

These petroglyphs on the northeast coast of
Lanai are also known as the
Bird Man of Lanai Petroglyphs and the
Shipwreck Beach Petroglyphs.
These petroglyphs got their "bird man"
nickname because may of them depict 12
inch tall stick figures with bird-like heads.
DRIVING DIRECTIONS:
You will need a four-wheel drive vehicle
to visit this site.
From the Lodge at Koele, drive past the
parking lot to the top of the hill and
drive on Highway 440 for 8.5 miles. Near the
coast, the dirt road to the left becomes
a sandy road. Go about 3 more miles to a
group of small fishing cabins. From there,
walk to an old run down lighthouse, and
look for a "Bird Man of Lanai" sign.
