Ruby Restaurant & Bakery (21) 119 N. Hotel Street across from Maunakea Market Place. Popular with residents and Chinatown habitues. One of Chinatown's most reasonably priced menus, featuring delicious jook (rice soup), some of the best fried rice in Honolulu and many other favorite Chinese dishes. Ask for the “rice casserole” (not on menu) with black mushroom and chicken or lap-chong (Chinese sausage). Ruby’s is well known for authentic Hong Kong-style baked goods. Open every day 6:30 am to 8:30 pm.

Mei Sum Dim Sum (27) 65 N. Pauahi Street. Hong Kong style dim sum and regular menu items. Sit down and take out, lunch and dinner.

Char Hung Sut Manapua (28) 64 N. Pauahi Street across the street from Mei Sum Dim Sum. Popular takeout for manapua, char siu, noodles, pork hash and other Chinese delicacies.

Legend Seafood Restaurant (19) 100 N. Beretania Street next to Sun-Yat Sen statue in the Chinese Cultural Plaza. Some say the best dim sum in Chinatown. A local favorite for Sunday brunch and lunch during the week. Wide variety of dim sum and bar. Open every day.

Buddhist Restaurant (19) Across from legends in the Chinese Cultural Plaza. Vegetarian dim sum. Closed Wednesdays.

Little Village Noodle House 1113 Smith Street. This trendy restaurant offers an extensive selection on menu, and denotes spicy from milder dishes. Cuisine includes traditional as well as surprisingly new Chinese specialties. Be sure to check the daily specials board. Available parking on the side and behind the restaurant for guests only. Don't be disappointed, call for reservations at 545-3008.

China House Restaurant (20) 100 N. Beretania Street in the Chinese Cultural Plaza. Featuring dim sum, fresh lobster, crab and fish. Full bar.

Empress Restaurant (21) 115 N Hotel Street, second floor of Wo Fat Building. Featuring dim sum, lobster and various dishes. Full bar.

Ken Fong (6) 1030 Smith Street. A popular restaurant for people working in the downtown Chinatown area. Best duck noodle in Chinatown.

Maunakea Market Place Food Court (12) 1120 Maunakea Street. K & W delicious lop cheung sausage and other Chinese food. Triple OneChinese Singaporean dishes, vegetarian and nonvegetarian. Noodle HouseJook (rice soup) and other Chinese food.

Double Eight Chinese Restaurant (22) 1113 Maunakea Street across from Maunakea Market Place.

Glowing Dragon (7) On Maunakea Street next to Shung Chong Yuen.

Ting Yin Chop Suey (4) 125 N. King Street. A favorite stop for dim sum and other traditional Chinese menu items. Gaze through the window at the trays filled with different types of dim sum and manapua.

Sea Fortune Chinese Restaurant (4) 111 N. King Street. Reasonably priced luncheon buffet and dim sum served daily on ground floor location, and second floor dining room features dim sum and Chinese menu. Bar.

Japanese Restaurants

Yasura Japanese Restaurant (26) 53 N. Beretania Street, on corner of Smith & Beretania. Mon-Fri 10:30 a.m.-9 p.m.; Sat-Sun 11 a.m.-9 p.m. A pleasant addition to the area featuring home-style Japanese food plus some popular Chinese dishes. Very reasonably priced, clean and newly decorated. Take out available. 599-8838.

TEA at 1024,(35) 1024 Nuuanu Avenue. This charming tea room is a favorite of locals and visitors alike. Walk through the boutique to the tea room, select your own special cup and saucer from Michelle’s beautiful collection of English china, and take a break for afternoon tea or lunch. TEA at 1024 sets the mood in its calling card with a quote from Henry James’ The Portrait of a Lady: “There are few hours in life more agreeable than the hour dedicated to the ceremony known as afternoon tea.” Luncheon and tea service available Tuesday through Saturday, 11 am to 4 pm.
