About Kalawao Town

Kalawao is a local community on the east side of Molokai's Kalaupapa Peninsula. It is one of two leprosy isolation settlements on the peninsula, the other being Kalaupapa Village on the west side of the peninsula. Two churches, a hospital, and several homes were built at Kalawao.

Today only two buildings remain, the Siloama Congregational Church (1936) and St. Philomena Catholic Church. Father Damien's remains are buried in the churchyard of St. Philomena's.
