Kalaupapa National Historical Park

Kakahaia National Wildlife Refuge
Fifteen acre wildlife refuge with a spring-fed pond and a 5.5 acre shallow water impoundment constructed for wading birds. The refuge was established in 1976 to protect a wetland habitat for endangered waterbirds, primarily the Hawaiian Silt and the Hawaiian Coot. Also provides a habitat for wintering migratory wetland birds. The coastal portioin of the refuge is managed by the County of hawaii. Kamehameha V Highway passes through the southern section of the refuge.
