Larry Ellison's Role in Lanai Island History

Information about Larry Ellison's role in the history of Lanai island in Hawaii.

When Canadian billionaire Larry Ellison purchased 97% of Lanai Island in 2012 he announced his plans to temporarily close the island's two Four Seasons Resorts: The Manele Bay Resort and the Lodge at Koele. The Manele Bay hotel was closed June 1, 2015 for a multi-million dollar transformation into an ultra-luxury resort and the Koele Lodge was closed to provide housing for construction workers. for the transformation. The Manele Bay Resort was expected to re-open in February of 2016 with a new name: "Four SEasons Resort Lanai".

Mr. Ellison's long term plans including transforming Lanai into "the first economically viable, 100 percent green community" and eventually building up to nine smaller hotels, an airport, tennis facilities, and improving the tourism infrastructure of Lanai

Building a tennis academy with dormatory style housing on 50 acres of land in Lanai City.

Building a university specializing in sustainability on 524 acres of land just outside Lanai City

Koele Rural Residential Development
Building a rural housing subdivision on 50 acres next to the Koele Horse Stables north of Lanai City with lots from a half acre to ten acres to allow farming.

Lanai Airport
Improving the Lanai Airport by adding a second runweay or extending the existing runway.

Kahalepalaoa Beach Resort
Building 100-unit oceanfront resort on 20 acres on the east coast of Lanai, near the spot where a day-trip activity known as "Club Lanai" once operated. The hotel will be designed in the style of a Hawaiian village with elevated bungalow accommodations. Plans include building a rural residential subdivision surrounding the resort with up to 50 homes on 250 acres of mostly oceanfront land. The subdivision would have a public beach park on either end.

Hulopoe Bay Residential Development
Building a 76 acre residential development bordering the Four Seasons Lanai at Hulopoe Bay.

Manele Mauka Development
Building a residential community to be known as "Manele Mauka" on 83 acres above Hulopoe Bay. The community would include a 20 acre park and two acres set aside for businesses supporting the local community such as grocery stores and gas stations.

Kaumalapau Harbor Development
Building a subdivision on 50 acres of ocean-view property above the harbor and adding 10 acres of industrial space to support harbor activities. Also being considered: fish farming and processing facilities.

Commercial Farming
Work with farmers interested in growing organic crops to supply the entire island and for export to neighbor islands and outside Hawaii. Build desalination plans to assisting farmers by converting salty ocean water to fresh water.
