Hula Festivals on the Big Island

Information about Hula Festivals on the Big Island of Hawaii.

Merrie Monarch Festival
he Merrie Monarch Festival is an annual week long hula festival held every March or April in the town of Hilo. The festival features live entertainment, craft fairs, and cultural demonstrations over several days, a Miss Aloha solo hula competition on Thursday, and ancient and modern hula competitions on Friday and Saturday. The competition has male and female categories. The Merrie Monarch Festival was founded in 1964 by George Naope and it is named after Hawaii's "Merrie Monarch" and patron of the arts, King David Kalakaua.

Moku O Keawe International Hula Festival
November festival featuring a hula competition that allows hula groups from outside Hawaii to compete.

Iolani Luahine Hula Festival
This hula festival and scholarship programs was named after kumu hula Iolani Luahine place every two years. The 4th Iolani Luahine Hula Festival will take place January 30-31, 2009 on the Kona Inn Shopping Village lawn.

Tahiti Fete of Hilo

Hula Kahiko Series
Series of outdoor traditional hula performances held in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park at a location within walking distance of the national park's Volcano Arts Center. Usually held on the 2nd or 3rd Saturday of each month. Call 808-987-7288 to confirm the schedule.

Naalehu Hawaiian Hula Festival
Annual event held over Labor Day weekend in the Kau Region of southeast Hawaii Island.
