Transportation in Hilo

Information about transportation in the town of Hilo on the east coast of the Big Island of Hawaii.

How to Get to Hilo
You can fly directly into Hilo International Airport or you can drive one of two routes from the Airport on the west side of the island near the coastal resort town of Kailua-Kona. NORTHERN ROUTE: This route is about 100 miles and it passes through the cowboy country town of Waimea on highways 190 and 19. SOUTHERN ROUTE: This route is about 125miles and it passes by Hawaii Volcanoes National Park on highway 11. Traffic can cause slow going on either of these roads so you should allow 3 or 4 hours to travel between Hilo and Kailua-Kona on either road.

Transportation Within Hilo
You will probably want to rent a car when you are visiting Hilo and the Big Island. There is usually plenty of parking in downtown Hilo except perhaps at busy meal times.

Hilo International Airport
Until 1989 this airport was known as General Lyman Field. It is located about two miles east of Hilo.
