Royal Gardens Structure Crushed by Lava
October 16, 2008

One of two remaiing homes destroyed.

1982 December
Major eruption in middle East Rift Zone

March 1983
The 1983 eruption entered its third major episode of lava production in the early morning of March 28, 1983, following a 3-1/2 week quiet period from March 4-8.

April 8-9, 1983
Lava fountaining from the vent south of Puu Kahaualea stopped on April 9, 1983. The southeast flow from that vent entered the Royal Gardens subdivision on April 8, 1983. Six or seven structures were destroyed before the flow stopped late in the afternoon of April 9, 1983. MORE The last and longest of the 3 flows began its advance on 6 April. It entered Royal Gardens subdivision on 8 April and destroyed 6 structures before the eruption stopped early on 9 April. Near the end of the eruption the flow front reached a velocity of 6 m/minute as the narrow and elongate terminus, centered on a subdivision street, advanced down a steep slope. Decemberelerating advance of the flow front continued through at least 11 April.

June 13-17 Following the National Park boundary, the flow entered Royal Gardens subdivision only locally, and no homes were destroyed. Episode 4 ended abruptly on 17 June, a little more than 4 days after it began.

June 29 - July 3
"Episode 5 began on 29 June. At 1000, a pool of lava was seen slowly rising inside the main episode 4 vent. At about 1300 lava production became vigorous, and episode 5 lava cascaded over the earlier spillway and began flowing SE within the previously evacuated episode 4 channel. Lava production quickly reached and was maintained at a rate similar to that of episode 4, approximately 100,000 m3/hour, and an aa flow began advancing SE over episode 3 and 4 basalts. The flow was fed by a vigorous pahoehoe channel that was generally bank-full and frequently overflowing. Advancing at average rates ranging from 80-165 m/hour, the flow front entered the NW part of Royal Gardens subdivision at 1919 on 1 July. It finally stopped 8 km from the vent at about 1030 on 3 July, more than 3 hours after the vent had stopped erupting. Traversing the subdivision, it burned and crushed 7 dwellings and cut off 4 others from road access. The average velocity of the flow moving down the 4-8° slopes of the subdivision was 56 m/hour, but the actual velocity ranged from 0-30 m/min. Periods of stagnation up to a few hours long alternated with rapid surges that advanced the flow front by 100-300 m in 30 minutes.

This morning, GOES-WEST imagery at 6:45 am shows smoke from a lava-induced forest fire in the abandoned Royal Gardens subdivision, probably combined with the gas plume from Pu`u `O`o, moving first NW then directly N. A small steam plume from the Waikupanaha ocean entry is also present and appears to be moving WSW and inland of the coast. CD officials report a strong ocean entry plume this morning.

October 17, 2008
Lava from the TEB vent and the rootless shield complex flows through tubes to the ocean. HVO geologists yesterday mapped the active flows continuing through the abandoned Royal Gardens subdivision; another structure was overrun by the flows during the day (see images). The ocean entry was fully active with several small lava streams and a large steam plume visible. No incandescence was seen between the rift zone eruption site and the top of the pali above Royal Gardens overnight. GOES-WEST thermal anomalies continue to be visible this morning suggesting the flows on the pali continue to be active.

October 18, 2008
Activity Summary for last 24 hours: Seismic tremor levels remain low in the summit. Sulfur dioxide emission rates from the Halema`uma`u vent remains high but emissions from the Pu`u `O`o vent have declined over the past week; tephra production continues from the Halema`uma`u vent. At the east rift eruption site, lava flows through tubes to the ocean west of Kalapana; surface flows continue to be active within the abandoned Royal Gardens subdivision.

Lava Envelopes Royal Gardens Home

2008 May
Lava from the 2007 Thanksgiving Eve Breakout (TEB) flow, erupting from fissure D of the July 21 eruption, continues to flow through what remains of the Royal Gardens subdivision and across the coastal plain within a well-established lava tube. Few breakouts from the tube have been observed along the flow over the past week. The lava reached the ocean at the Waikupanaha lava delta near Kapaahu.

    2008 June
From USGS Report: "surface lava flows from the east rift zone for the first time in several weeks. Lava broke out of the tube system, both on the east rift zone and above the Royal Gardens subdivision. At the same time, enough lava was being transported through the tube system to result in spectacular littoral explosions at the ocean entry during early July. All of these signs point to a lava tube system that was full to the point of overflowing."

    1980's
During fountaining episodes in 1983 and 1984, several lava flows traveled about 6.5 km through rainforest and into the Royal Gardens subdivision, which is built on the steep south flank of the volcano. The lava flows reached the subdivision in as little as 13 hours, and destroyed 16 houses.
