Tidal Waves in Hilo
Information about the deadly tidal waves that slammed
into the town of Hilo in 1946 and 1960.
At one time the waterfront area of Hilo was
more developed then it is today, for example
there use to be another row of stores on the
waterfront. After the 1960 tidal wave destroyed
more then 500 buildings in Hilo the lowest lying
waterfront areas have been used only for recreational
and memorial parks.
1946 Hilo Tsunami
On Apri l, 1946 a tsunami slammed into Hawaii
that killed 159 people in all and 122 on the
big island.
1960 Hilo Tsunami
Another tidal wave hit Hilo on May 23, 1960 that destroyed
530 buildings and killed 61 in spite of the siren warning
system that was established in 1948. Most of the people
who were killed ignored the early warning sirens.
