Kaloko-Honokohau National Historic Park was established in 1978 to preserve, protect, and interpret traditional native Hawaiian activities and culture. The park is 1160 acres in size and it includes an ancient Hawaiian settlement, fishponds, ancient house platforms, petroglyphs, heiau.

The park is located at the base of the Kualalai Volcano on the western Kona coast of the Big Island, approximately three miles north of the town of Kailua-Kona and three miles south of Keahole-Kona International Airport, on Queen Kaahumanu Highway (Highway 19). The visitors center is on Highway 19, half a mile north of the Honokohau Harbor entrance on the ocean side.
